Despite what you may think, selling your car isn’t simply profit – there are several things that can stop you from getting the price you want for your vehicle. If you’re thinking about selling your car and want to ensure that you’re getting the best deal then here’s what you need to look out for.
Hidden Costs of Selling a Car
- Advertising Fees – If you’re selling your car privately then you may be surprised to find that most services require payment for you to advertise the vehicle. Depending on where you advertise this could be anything from a couple of quid up to over £20 a week; if you don’t manage a quick sale this could end up costing you far more than you want it to.
- Transaction Fees – a little known fact is that some car buying services charge you to sell your car. Sounds ridiculous, but it’s true! Some companies have transaction fees that increase with higher priced vehicles, costing you between £50 and £75 depending on how much you were quoted for your car.
- Quoted Price Reduction – this is where a lot of people feel let down, they get quoted a great price online but then this figure drops massively upon visual inspection. Sometimes this change in value is justified (if you didn’t declare damage for example) but there are many cases where money has been knocked off with no real justification.
- Valuing Fee – again, this is a cost that should simply not exist but you will find that some services charge a fee for giving your car a physical inspection. How much this cost is and whether there is a cost at all will depend on the company you are looking to sell your car with.
- Transport Costs – many services will take your car as soon as you agree to the sale, meaning that you need to find an alternative way to get home. While that may not be a large cost, it is something that you would need to think about. Additionally, not many places agree to collect vehicles, so if you have a non-runner then you’d have to organise and pay for transport to take the vehicle to the drop off point.
- Fast Payment Costs – another hidden cost is a very sneaky one indeed, where the car buying service will charge you additional costs to get the money to you quickly. So if you need the cash quickly you may have to forfeit a bit of your profit in order to get it the very next day, not exactly ideal.
